Electronic registries (eRegistries) in health care function as effective single data collection points for health care providers, as monitors of intervention coverage, and as the providers’ performance evaluation mechanism. Studies indicate the potential impact of clinical data analysis as a method to improve the health care system and patient outcomes. Databases aiming for the collection and maintenance of clinical data are traditionally referred to as clinical registries. With the advancement of information technology and its application in biomedical data management, registries are becoming a significant part of health information systems. This article introduces the basics of clinical registries, the types and uses, their global uptake, and future directions of research.
